Or are you looking for ways to help protect yourself from identity theft? A great place to start is freezing your credit. Here’s what to know. A credit freeze is something you can do anytime, for any reason. But it’s especially helpful if you’re dealing with [identity theft](https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/what-know-about-identity-theft) or a [lost wallet or data breach](https://www.identitytheft.gov/Info-Lost-or-Stolen). While a freeze is in place, nobody can open a new credit account in your name. A freeze - is free to place or lift — and doesn’t affect your [credit score](https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/credit-scores) - is available to anyone, for any reason - lasts until you lift it To place a credit freeze, contact all three credit bureaus — [Equifax](https://consumer.ftc.gov/now-leaving?external_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.equifax.com%2Fpersonal%2Fcredit-report-services&back_url=https%3A%2F%2Fconsumer.ftc.gov%2Fconsumer-alerts%2F2025%2F09%2Fget-credit-freeze-stop-identity-thieves), [Experian](https://consumer.ftc.gov/now-leaving?external_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.experian.com%2Fhelp%2F&back_url=https%3A%2F%2Fconsumer.ftc.gov%2Fconsumer-alerts%2F2025%2F09%2Fget-credit-freeze-stop-identity-thieves), and [TransUnion](https://consumer.ftc.gov/now-leaving?external_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.transunion.com%2Fcredit-help&back_url=https%3A%2F%2Fconsumer.ftc.gov%2Fconsumer-alerts%2F2025%2F09%2Fget-credit-freeze-stop-identity-thieves). When you need to lift the freeze — to do things like get a credit card or buy a car — you only need to contact the credit bureau the lender uses to check your credit. When you’re done, you can freeze it again. If you forget that you froze your credit and a lender runs a credit report, they will be notified that the credit is frozen. At that point, you can “thaw” your credit report for the lender to run it and then freeze it again afterward. Along with a credit freeze, you can also get an initial fraud alert if you are — or suspect you may be — affected by identity theft. Initial fraud alerts (also free) make lenders verify your identity before they grant new credit in your name. There are also two other types of free alerts — extended fraud alerts and active-duty alerts…you choose- the alert depends on your situation and needs. They weave a web of lies about some bogus crisis. Then they trick older adults into giving them tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. **The scams start with lies designed to create a sense of urgency and fear.** - Lie #1: Someone is using your accounts. Scammers pretend to be a bank employee with a warning about suspicious account activity. Or claim to be an Amazon rep following up on potentially fraudulent purchases. - Lie #2: Your information is being used to commit crimes. Scammers might say they’re with the government and tell their target that their Social Security number is linked to serious crimes. - Lie #3: There’s a security problem with your computer. This lie might start with a computer security alert that warns of a hacked computer with a phone number to call for help. Once they’ve convinced their mark that this crisis is real, they make empty promises and offer fake “help.” They say the only way to get out of the situation is to follow their very specific instructions — which always involve moving money. They tell their target that doing so will protect the money in their accounts or clear their name. Some say they’re helping catch the “real” criminals. A new FTC data spotlight report, [False alarm, real scam: how scammers are stealing older adults’ life savings](https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/data-visualizations/data-spotlight), shows that reports of losses to business and government imposters filed by older adults (60+) are soaring. Many reported losing tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars. In fact, reported losses of over $100,000 increased nearly sevenfold from 2020 to 2024. **How can you protect yourself from a business or government imposter scam?** - Never transfer or send money to anyone in response to an unexpected call or message. Even if they claim you’re moving your money to “protect it.” - Talk about it with someone you trust. Especially if the stranger on the phone says it’s serious, involves a crime, or claims to be from the government. - If you think the message could be real, verify the story. Contact the organization in question using a phone number, website, or email address you know is real. Don’t use the contact information in the unexpected message. Government agencies will never threaten you, and they’ll never tell you to transfer your money to “protect it,” deposit cash into Bitcoin ATMs, or hand off stacks of cash or gold to a courier. That’s a scam. Report it to the FTC at [ReportFraud.ftc.gov](https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/). And scammers are looking to prey on people’s generosity. So how can you make sure your donations go to the people who need them and not to a scammer? **Donate to charities you know and trust with a proven track record of dealing with disasters.** **Before you give, research the charity yourself** — especially if the donation request comes on social media. Check out the charity on the Better Business Bureau’s Give.org, or [Charity Watch](https://consumer.ftc.gov/now-leaving?external_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.charitywatch.org%2F&back_url=https%3A%2F%2Fconsumer.ftc.gov%2Fconsumer-alerts%2F2024%2F10%2Fafter-disaster-make-your-donations-count). Find out exactly how much of your donation will go directly to the people the charity says it helps. **Don’t donate to anyone who insists you must pay by cash, gift card, wiring money, or cryptocurrency.** That’s how scammers tell you to pay. If you decide to donate, paying by credit card gives you more protections. **Be cautious about giving to individuals on [crowdfunding](https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/donating-through-crowdfunding-social-media-and-fundraising-platforms) sites.** Know that money raised in a crowdfunding campaign goes to the campaign organizer, not directly to the people or cause it’s set up to help. Review the platform’s policies — does it take measures to verify postings that ask for help after a disaster? And know that donating via crowdfunding is not tax deductible. **Confirm the number before you text to donate**. If someone asks you to donate by text, call the number on the charity’s website to confirm you have the right number to donate by text. To learn more about how to donate safely, go to ftc.gov/charity. This time, they’re sending texts claiming there’s a problem with something you bought. They offer a refund if you click a link — but it’s a scam. Here’s how the scam works so you can avoid it. You get an unexpected text that looks like it’s from Amazon. It claims the company did a “routine quality inspection” and an item you recently bought doesn’t meet Amazon’s standards or has been recalled. The text offers you a full refund and says you don’t need to return the item — as long as you click a link to request your money back. But there is no refund. Instead, it’s a [phishing scam](https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-recognize-and-avoid-phishing-scams) to steal your money or [personal information](https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/what-know-about-identity-theft). To avoid a scam like this: - Don’t click links in unexpected texts — and don’t respond to them. If you think the message could be legit, contact the company using a phone number, email, or website you know is real — not the info from the text. - Check your Amazon account. If you’re worried, log in through the Amazon website or app — don’t use the link in the text — to see if there’s a problem with or recall on anything you’ve ordered. - Send unwanted texts to [7726 (SPAM)](https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-recognize-and-report-spam-text-messages#report) or use your phone’s “report junk” option. This list recognizes the top 250 regional banks and 250 credit unions in the United States. NHFCU received a perfect score; five stars from Newsweek and market data research firm Plant-A Insights Group. https://www.newsweek.com/rankings/americas-best-regional-banks-credit-unions-2025/new-hampshire According to Nancy Cooper, Global Editor in Chief at Newsweek, “Regional banks and credit unions are the financial backbone of communities nationwide. They serve as vital engines at the local level as they support small businesses, fund projects and ensure easy access to essential banking services. With intimate knowledge of local economies, these banks often form strong bonds with customers, enabling them to better meet their needs.” NHFCU’s VP of Financial Services and Marketing, Polly Saltmarsh said, “Once again, we are proud and excited to be recognized on the national level. We know our community and we strive to remain a strong organization committed to making a positive difference for our members. Being recognized on a national level means so much to our hardworking team.” [![newsweeks logo](https://nhfcu.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/newsweek-assets2-300x47.png "newsweeks logo")](https://nhfcu.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/newsweek-assets2.png) **Categories:** News --- ### [Financial Literacy Tips - Avoiding Credit Card Debt](https://nhfcu.org/financial-literacy-tips-avoiding-credit-card-debt/) **Published:** September 24, 2024 **Author:** NHFCU Staff **Content:** A little financial wellness never hurt anyone… Understanding core financial principles can significantly impact our lives and our [budgets](https://www.fool.com/the-ascent/personal-finance/best-budgeting-apps/?luri=%2Fpersonal-finance%2Farticles%2F5-must-know-financial-tips-everyone-should-learn%2F&furi=%2Fpersonal-finance%2Farticles%2F5-must-know-financial-tips-everyone-should-learn%2F<yp=txt). Richard Barrington, a financial analyst for [Credit Sesame](https://www.creditsesame.com/), shares five must-know financial tips everyone should learn. This week we will focus on credit card debt. ### Avoid credit card debt According to Barrington, credit card debt is notably the most hazardous type of debt one can incur. This is primarily because [credit cards](https://www.fool.com/the-ascent/credit-cards/?luri=%2Fpersonal-finance%2Farticles%2F5-must-know-financial-tips-everyone-should-learn%2F&furi=%2Fpersonal-finance%2Farticles%2F5-must-know-financial-tips-everyone-should-learn%2F<yp=txt) are always readily available, making it far too easy to accumulate debt. The high interest rates associated with credit cards (average of 24.74% APR as of August 2024) exacerbate the issue. Compare that to a 12.8% interest rate for personal loans, a 6.73% rate for car loans, or a 6.59% for a mortgage, and you’re treading dangerous waters. Note: NHFCU’s Visa credit card is at 12.9% annual percentage rate. Furthermore, the lack of a fixed repayment period means that credit card debt can continue to accrue interest indefinitely, deepening the financial hole. Would you buy an item that had a ticket price of $200 but when you got the register it costs $221.59? If you put that purchase on a credit card, that is exactly what you are doing. [MIT Sloan](https://mitsloan.mit.edu/press/mit-sloan-study-shows-credit-cards-act-to-step-gas-to-increase-spending) completed a study where they found that credit cards serve to ‘step on the gas’ by putting costs out-of-mind regardless of the price of the product. More specifically, the study revealed that credit cards drive greater purchasing by sensitizing reward networks in the brain, involving the same dopaminergic reward center (the striatum) that is exploited by addictive drugs…” With credit cards being readily available, lack of a fixed repayment period, incredibly high interest rates, and the psychological aspects of credit card usage, there is the high possibility of accruing interest indefinitely, deepening the financial hole. ### Pay more than the minimum on credit cards As Barrington points out, one strategic approach to managing credit card debt is to always pay more than the minimum payment required. Credit card companies benefit when consumers extend their repayment period, as this leads to more accumulated interest. By paying more than the minimum, you can significantly reduce the lifespan of your debt and save on interest. As with any debt, paying extra towards the principle each month can reduce the lifespan of the loan and save you money on interest. This is even more pronounced when talking about credit cards. Credit cards have some of the highest rates averaging around 25% and some as high as 33%. By paying more than the minimum payment, you will not only pay the credit card down fast you will pay a lot less in interest. Example. A credit card with a $3,000 balance at rate of 25% and minimum payment of 80.00 will take 74 months to pay off and cost you an additional $2,896 in interest – totaling $5,896. By paying an additional $100 each month it will take you 21 months to pay off and cost you an additional $723 in interest – totaling $3,723, that’s a savings of over $1,100. Credit cards can be a good thing when used properly. If you are diligent about paying off 100% of the balance each month, they can cost you nothing. Using them in this way can be a positive financial decision as they may improve your credit score and can provide you with rewards points or travel miles with each purchase.
