You Never Know What Someone is Going Through

When was the last time you heard a story about someone's financial struggle and it made a huge impact on you, to the point of stopping you in your tracks? Maybe it was your best friend, a coworker, or someone in your family. You didn't know. You couldn't know. For whatever reason, that person wasn't ready to tell you out of shame, embarrassment, or possibly helplessness. Sometimes it really has to hit “home." It truly did with one of our NHFCU employees, Meghan Noone, Senior Financial Wellness Coach from our Centers for Finance & Education. Meghan tells her story about how financial struggles impacted her life and that of her own family.

“For my family and me, money has always been the elephant in the room. It was “that thing” we didn’t talk about. For many people of my generation, we were taught that it was considered "rude" to ask someone how much money they make or how much something cost. And, no one talked money in our house. Still, I knew, growing up, my parents didn't have a lot of money. I just didn’t realize how bad the situation was until I was in my early 30’s. That’s when my father died suddenly of a heart attack. One minute he was there, the next, he wasn’t.

What I learned after his death is that financial stress was one of the contributors to the heart attack that ultimately took his life. My passion for working with the Centers for Finance & Education is to help members avoid heartache like my family did because of financial burdens. In order for members to open up to us about their money struggles, they need a safe environment to do so. We provide that at our Centers for Finance & Education."
